I read all 53 comments posted here as of 1/4/10 and I must say… theres an enormous amount of errors and misguided opinions. The Rainbow vacuum IS a good cleaner, and as far as canister vacuums are concerned, Rainbow probably has the best power nozzle on the market. Very aggressive, great vibrating action to get the sand up from the bottom of the carpet. The down side is (not every home) but in many homes, the carpets are so dirty…

  • juanvenus:

that they DO in fact plug the hepa filter. The filter plugs up and this slowly damages the motor because it’s being forced to run under an abnormal load or strain. It can also damage the circuit board. This type of motor failure is not covered by the warranty.

  • juanvenus:

Yes, the Rainbow DOES have a filter for the few of you out there who didn’t know… like Kathy Lee (ha ha)… she says on this video theres no filters. Wrong. she, like most Rainbow owners don’t even know theres a filter in the machine because the salespeople don’t tell them about it. The customer should be told about servicing the filter. In a clean home, it’s a non-issue, but in most homes, it can be a huge issue. For the Kirby guys… yes, your Hepa bag plugs up too. Don’t lie.

  • juanvenus:

Finally, I’d like to address the comments about the “rainbow doesn’t work” video on you tube… you guys mentioned the bald fat stupid guy that posted that video, then disabled the “comments” section so no one could explain that he’s a fraud. He was getting bombarded with negative comments and insults so he shut off the comments. You folks on here were talking about him using a laser particle counter on the video. If you watch the video again, you’ll notice that he’s cheating…

  • juanvenus:

When he puts the particle counter on the back of the Rainbow, he’s holding it up to the TOP exhaust port… the “room air” that it simply traveling through the machine to cool the motor. That air is not filtered. He never puts the tester by the hepa filter where its cleaned. He a bullshit artist, hiding in a shitty little vacuum store trying to peddle Miele CRAP vacuums because he lacks the skills to sell the good equipment. Don’t believe his bullshit.

    KIRBY is better!!

  • missbipbip1:

The new models does have a small filter. The older models didn’t have any. The water is the filter in the older models.

  • missbipbip1:

I used to demonstrate Rainbows. I went in a house one day and kept picking salt up out of the carpet. I asked them why salt was in the carpet. They said Kirby had demonstrated in that exact spot about 4 months ago and had put salt in the carpet as part of the demonstration. Sold another Rainbow!! Kirby is equivalent to the MUCH CHEAPER Dirt Devil, imho.

  • missbipbip1:

I love, love, love a Rainbow. I do wish they had not put a filter in them. The old ones were great with just the water and you didn’t have to maintain the filter.

  • ORU4me:

It depends on which model of Rainbow you are referring to. Millions of older Rainbows still in use (model D2, D3C, D4C) do not use filters, other than the water in the water pan. Separate filters in Rainbows were first introduced in the late 1990′s, with the e-Series models. This was to increase the efficiency of picking up “non-wettables” (talcum powder, fireplace ash, etc.) which, if sucked up in very large quantities could bounce off the water and back into the air. (Don’t vacuum ashes!)

  • ORU4me:

In the 1960′s there was no match for Rainbow. I saw demo where Kirby and Hoover exhausts (captured in a big plastic bag and channeled into a Rainbow inlet hose) turned the water grey in the Rainbow water pan, from the exhausted dust. . . yet another same type of demo capturing a Rainbow exhausting into a second Rainbow, left the water in the second Rainbow clean. Wet dust can’t fly! Today, HEPA filters in Kirbys & others have greatly narrowed the differences, but, dust-into bag = dust out.

  • juanvenus:

Yes, I was referring to the newer models, from 98 to present.

  • juanvenus:

Actually, it had nothing to do with “efficiency” nor was it the big “consumer reports scandal”. The reason they put the filter on was because when the first e series units were created (before being mass produced) the new e series design was blowing dust out at an incredible rate, it was a mess. They had to do something, so a filter hid that mess, & created a little back pressure which allowed the new model to work properly. The first couple years it was a disposable filter. A disaster.
