For homes that are carpeted throughout, you’ll probably prefer a high-scoring upright. Upright vacuums also cost and weigh less than canisters and is easier to store, though they tend to be noisier.

On the other hand, canister vacuums are better if you spend additional cleaning time on drapes and upholstery. Canister vacuums are easier to maneuver while cleaning stairs, something to consider if your home has two or more floors. There are a growing number of features available, such as dirt sensors, HEPA filters and bagless dirt bins, but some of these enhancements may contribute more to price than to function. Other, more essential features may be missing from the economy models.

Paying less often gets you fewer features and a lesser-quality piece of cleaning equipment. And while cordless and even robotic vacuums have joined your list of choices, neither have been top performers so far.
