My mom buys an industrial vacuum cleaner. I forget the brand name. It's a canister vac. She had it for 25 or 30 years. She bought another one and it's still going strong.
I have a Kenmore vacuum (cost around $250 or $350) and it's been great. We've had it almost 2 years. I had one when I had my own place. It worked for at least 3 years. My brother has it now and he's had it for another 4 years at least.
I like the canister vacuums better as they seem to last longer. My husband has an upright and it's just not that great. He's had it for 5 years. It still works but it looks junky to me. It doesn't seem to have as good of suction as the Kenmore canister vac.

Electrolux for 30+ years.
Seeking vacuum, go to vacuum repair shops (more than one) and ask which ones has least repairs, parts availability, etc.. Majority of repair shops have 2nd hand & good quality vacuums for sale.

My Mother in law and her MIL both have refurbished Kirby's they receieved as wedding gifts... One is over 60 yrs. old and the other is over 30 yrs. Both work GREAT ! I think the main reason they work as well as they do is that they get them maintained once/twice a year !
I have a Hoover Savvy (4yrs.) I got it as a gift so I sprung for the extended service warranty which was an additional $100 or so... I'm glad I did I've taken my vacuum in for maintance/repairs at least 2x a yr. and when I get my vacuum back it's like having purchased a new one !
So, which ever vac. you decide to go with see if it comes with an extended warranty.. If it does BUY IT and take it in for maintance.. It's well worth it... I've saved 100's of dollars just having the warranty !
Good luck

I have one for 32 years now at home but anyone you buy now the companies stop form making bags for them. I know this because I clean other companies with Vacuum cleaners they buy. And they had to buy more new ones for me to use because unable to get bags for the old ones.
So I wish you luck in your choice!

My first one, I got about 3 years out of. Second one, more than 20, but I paid for repairs several times. Third one, about 2 years. Fourth one, still pretty new, so no telling.
FWIW, the two that died young were uprights. The long-lasting one was a cannister. The new one is also a cannister.
Be aware that long hair wrapping the beater bar (that burning smell?) substantially shortens the life of either kind of vacuum.

I have two Bissells. One is a 3-way convertible stick vacuum that I’ve had for 8 years. I used it my hard-surface floors. I also have a Bissell bagless that’s about 4 years old. It does a pretty good job with pet hair. As much as I want a Dyson, I’m happy with these two.
