A vacuum’s weight can be a factor if your arms are weak or your home has multiple levels. While top-scoring uprights weigh 20 pounds or more, several strong performers weighed less. Canister models weigh more than uprights, though you’re moving only the hose and wand when cleaning. If you’re considering an upright vacuum, also consider a self-propelled model if your arms tire while vacuuming.

I’m in the market for a new vacuum cleaner and I just wanted to know how long other people have owned their vacuum cleaner. It seems like my family is cursed with vacuum cleaners that quit working after only two, maximum, three years. Is this normal? Are vacuum cleaners meant to die an early death so we are forced to keep buying new ones? Any suggestions for a good strong vacuum with a long life span?

Canisters, uprights, and hand -helds are examples of the portable vacuum family. Carpets and floors are still the most commonly vacuumed targets. You’ll find uprights and canisters that do a fine job on both for as little as $80. Select the vacuum that best fits your cleaning requirements. For homes that are carpeted throughout, you’ll probably prefer a high-scoring upright. Upright vacuums also cost and weigh less than canisters and is easier to store, though they tend to be noisier. On the other hand, canister vacuums are better if you spend additional cleaning time on drapes and upholstery. Canister vacuums are easier to maneuver while cleaning stairs, something to consider if your home has two or more floors. If you clean often with tools, check our Ratings for models that scored well in our through-the-hose airflow tests. The top performers maintained more airflow as their bags or bins filled with dust.
There are a growing number of features available, such as dirt sensors, HEPA filters and bagless dirt bins, but some of these enhancements may contribute more to price than to function. Other, more essential features may be missing from the economy models. Paying less often gets you fewer features and a lesser-quality piece of cleaning equipment. And while cordless and even robotic vacuums have joined your list of choices, neither have been top performers so far. Canisters, uprights, and hand –helds provide adequate cleaning power at an economical price.

Of course, buying a new vacuum is one possible answer- but we would like to avoid that if we can.
Sorry, I don’t know the specs on the vacuum. It is just a regular vacuum cleaner that uses bags.
It has a bad odor when turned on.
Can we clean the vacuum somehow- if we cleaned it and changed the bag, would that remedy this problem?
Thanks!
